Agronomic performance of two generations (F12 and F13) of thirteen winter wheat composite cross wheat populations with differing cultivation histories in 2014/15. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Boening, Andreas; Elsner, Maren; Finckh, Maria R.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Nuijten, E.; Messmer, Monika; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Goldringer, I.; Péter, Mikó; Megyeri, Maria; Borgen, Anders; Rasmussen, Søren K.; Pearce, Bruce; Wolfe, Martin.
As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). A winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CCP was created by intercrossing 20 varieties in 2001, through collaboration with the Elm Farm Research Centre and the John Innes Institute. In 2005, a seed batch of the F4 was equally...

Diversifying cereal production Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Modern cereal production has reached a stage of homogeneity, where both environment, nutrition and culinary quality suffers. In order to increase cereal diversity, projects have started investigating heritage varieties, and varieties and species with exotic traits. Well performing varieties and landraces will be used as they are, or will be used as genetic donors in a participatory breeding programme developing composite cross population focussing on disease resistance or special quality traits.

Evolutionary changes of weed competitive traits in winter wheat composite cross populations in organic and conventional farming systems. Organic Eprints
Bertholdsson, Nils-Ove; Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
Seedling root and shoot growth in hydroponics and allelopathic activity using a bioassay have been studied in very diverse populations of winter wheat grown under either organic or conventional conditions for a number of generations and subjected only to natural selection. The study was conducted on seeds from generation 6 (F6) and 11 (F11) from three composite cross populations (CCPs) produced by the Organic Research Centre in the UK. Since the F5 the populations were maintained under organic and conventional conditions in Germany. Two parallel populations were created from each CC, resulting in a total of six organic and six conventional CCPs. The sets of parallel populations showed similar evolutionary trends indicating that the observed changes are...

Improving disease resistance of pea - clues from plant-microbe interactions Organic Eprints
Wille, Lukas; Hohmann, Pierre; Messmer, Monika; Studer, Bruno.
Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a valuable protein source for food and feed. Pea is able to significantly improve soil fertility and, hence, represents an ecologically important crop in low-input farming systems. Despite their importance, pea cultivation remains below expectations due to low and unstable yields caused by a complex of soil-borne pathogens. The goal of this project is to improve our understanding of resistance mechanisms of pea against soil-borne diseases. To achieve this goal, more than 300 pea lines were evaluated for resistance in pot-experiments and a subset of susceptible and resistant pea genotypes has been identified. In a next step, key pathogens and beneficials in the pea rhizosphere and the role of root exudates in determining the...

Flath, Kerstin; Schmitt, Anne-Kristin; Klocke, Bettina; Wilde, Peer; Schmiedchen, Brigitta; Miedaner, Thomas; Koch, Silvia; Spieß, Hartmut; Szabo, Lilla.

Performance and variability of thirteen winter wheat composite cross populations (CCP) with differing cultivation histories. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Haak, Jette; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..
Alternative breeding approaches in organic agriculture have started to address pressing issues such as the lack of appropriate plant varieties particularly suited to cope with higher biotic and abiotic stresses, generally found in low-input and organic production systems. This challenge, coupled with the additional pressure of loss of plant genetic diversity, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity. This High genetic Diversity (Hi-D) approach is relevant to organic agricultural systems for two reasons; firstly the availability of diverse germplasm improves chances of finding germplasm suited for low-input conditions as found in...

The effect of changing environmental conditions on composite cross winter wheat populations over six years from the F8 to the F14. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Haak, Jette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..
A lack of appropriate crop varieties specifically bred for the higher biotic and abiotic stresses experienced in organic and low-input systems, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity. The creation of CCPs using carefully chosen parental varieties, coupled with the ability of the populations to adapt to local environments means that these populations are well suited for low-input and organic agricultural systems (Phillips and Wolfe, 2005). COBRA (Coordinating Organic plant BReeding Activities for Diversity) aims to “support and develop plant breeding and seed production in Europe by increasing the use of plant material with High...

Why farmers should manage the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis Organic Eprints
Rillig, Matthias C.; Aguilar‐Trigueros, Carlos A.; Camenzind, Tessa; Cavagnaro, Timothy R.; Degrune, Florine; Hohmann, Pierre; Lammel, Daniel R.; Mansour, India; Roy, Julien; van der Heijden, Marcel G.A.; Yang, Gaowen.
The Tansley review by Ryan & Graham (2018) provided a welcome critical perspective on the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in large‐scale industrial agriculture, with a focus on cereals (wheat, Triticum aestivum). They conclude that there is little evidence that farmers should consider the abundance or diversity of AM fungi when managing crops. We welcome many of the points made in the paper, as they give an opportunity for self‐reflection, considering that the importance of AM fungi in agroecosystems is often taken for granted. However, we suggest that it is too early to draw the overall conclusion that the management of AM fungi by farmers is currently not warranted. We offer the following points to contribute to the discussion. The first...

Yield stability analysis for three winter wheat composite cross populations under organic and conventional management over five years Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Finckh, Maria R..
Increasingly uncertain climatic conditions threaten the security and stability of agricultural systems (Østergård et al., 2009; Döring et al., 2011) and a better understanding of genotype x environment (GxE) interactions is needed to shift the agricultural focus from manipulating environments to grow crops to creating crops that fit into the environment (Østergård et al., 2009; Lammerts van Bueren et al., 2012). GxE interactions play a pivotal role in assessing yield stability of crops and the challenge of changing climatic conditions necessitates that new crop cultivars should have broad adaptability, stable agronomic performance over a range of environments and management systems and generally high yields (Akcura et al., 2006). The High genetic Diversity...

Yield stability in winter wheat composite cross populations under organic and conventional conditions from the F5 to the F13. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Finckh, Maria R..
The use of Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) as an alternative breeding approach, has gained significant interest, particularly due to the potential adaptability of evolving populations to specific locations. Three winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CC populations were created in 2001 through collaboration between Elm Farm Research Centre (ORC) and the John Innes Institute in the UK. The populations were created through the inter-crossing of 20 parental varieties, in order to create a high yielding (Y) population; a high baking quality (Q) population and a population consisting of the 9 x 12 (YQ) intercrosses. Since 2005/6 (F5), the populations have been maintained at Kassel University without conscious selection. The objectives of the study are to...
